What is the IndioBravo Film Festival?
The IndioBravo Film Festival is a festival showcasing the best independent and mainstream Filipino films released in the last 2-3 years. This year, we have 15 full-length features and 10 shorts and it is a very diverse lineup of films that straddles a wide spectrum of genres, themes and directorial style or voice, with an authentically Filipino sensibility or perspective. The festival is mounted by the IndioBravo Film Foundation and is in its first year.
What is the IndioBravo Film Foundation?
The IndioBravo Film Foundation is a non-profit organization based in New York City and established in late 2008. Its aims are: (1) to promote the Filipino film brand globally and (2) to empower indigent communities in the Philippines to appropriate film and video as tools for social advancement and the preservation of cultural heritage. It does this by organizing Filipino film festivals in key cities worldwide and running a program that trains local villagers in indigent communities in the Philippines to shoot and edit documentaries about social issues affecting their community.
What does “IndioBravo” mean?
The term “Indio Bravo” was the pseudonym of the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal (1861-1898), who used it as a by-line for his subversive and incendiary writings that were critical of Spain, then colonizer of the Philippines. It means the “Exemplary Native”, an underdog who surpasses expectations, an apt metaphor for the burgeoning new wave of Philippine cinema.
